Cancer Awareness

BACK TO MAIN INDEX

Since the early 1990s, incidence rates for all cancers combined have increased for all the broad age groups in the UK. The increase is largest in people aged 25-49, where rates have increased by 22%.

Each year, more than a third of all cancer cases in the UK are diagnosed in people aged 75 and over.

The NHS has committed to helping people make healthier lifestyle choices and treat avoidable illness early on. In particular, to deliver new evidence-based interventions and treatments to tackle the risks associated with tobacco, alcohol and obesity.

An important part of these ambitions, is to increase awareness of symptoms and preventative measures. We need to maximise the number of cancers identified through national screening programmes, and to accelerate access to diagnostics and treatment.

To help with this, our Practice will be highlighting national awareness campaigns on our website and displaying posters in our waiting areas. We will also be encouraging our patients to engage in cancer screening programmes, such as for bowel cancer and breast cancer.

The Cancer Research website provides information about all types of cancer, with helpful links, things you can do to help raise awareness, and a fully moderated chat forum so you can talk to others who are affected by cancer.

If you have concerns about any symptoms you’re noticing, do please speak to your GP for further information.

The important thing is to raise your concerns.

Trust your instincts.
Don’t delay!
