Cancer Awareness campaigns for November
November 2024 is Cancer Awareness month for:
Gastric or Stomach Cancer
The risk of developing stomach cancer increases as we get older. It is more common in men than in women. Common symptoms include: heartburn or indigestion that does not go away, pain or discomfort in tummy (abdomen), loss of appetite, feeling full after only eating a small amount, unexplained weight loss.
Other possible symptoms can include: feeling or being sick, difficulty swallowing, burping a lot, black poo (stools), feeling tired, weak or breathless.
Speak to your GP if you are experiencing any prolonged and persistent symptoms as listed above.
Lung Cancer
This is one of the most common and most serious types of cancer. There are usually no signs or symptoms in the early stages of lung cancer, so if you have any of the following symptoms it is important to make an appointment with your GP:
- a persistent cough
- coughing up blood
- persistent breathlessness
- unexplained tiredness and weight loss
- an ache or pain when breathing or coughing
Mouth Cancer
There are over 8,800 new cases of mouth cancer in the UK every year. The majority of deaths from mouth cancer occur because of late detection, due to a low public awareness of the signs, symptoms, and risks.
Early detection is the key! Self-checks for mouth cancer take just a couple of minutes.
Mouth Cancer symptoms and signs
Your dentist is the best person to see if you have any concerns, as they have the right equipment to be able to look closely in your mouth. We will always refer you to make an urgent appointment with your dentist in the first instance.
Pancreatic Cancer
Your pancreas is in the top part of your tummy. Symptoms of cancer are hard to spot, but can include:
- the whites of your eyes or your skin turn yellow (jaundice), and you may also have itchy skin, darker pee and paler poo than usual
- loss of appetite or losing weight without trying to
- feeling tired or having no energy
- a high temperature, or feeling hot or shivery
