Flu and Covid Autumn Boosters

BACK TO MAIN INDEX

Invitations are going out to all eligible patients from this week.

We are running two clinics for all our eligible patients:

  • Saturday 5th October 2024 (9am to 1pm, and 2pm to 5pm)
  • Saturday 12th October 2024 (9am to 1pm, and 2pm to 5pm)

These are now open to eligible patients to book, and invitations are being sent out. If we have a valid mobile telephone number for you on record, you will receive a self-book text in the week of 9th September, otherwise it will be by letter which will take a little longer to reach you.

If you think you are eligible and have not received an invitation, please contact Reception to check your eligibility and to book your slot. Please check that we have the correct contact details for you on your record.

The practice does receive additional funding to provide these vaccinations, so we very much appreciate your support in booking with us if you can.

We look forward to seeing you then!

For this campaign, the broad eligibility categories are as set out below. If you are in these groups, we will invite you for vaccination. Please note, as they are slightly different this winter, there may be a few people who have previously been eligible but are not eligible for either or both of these vaccines. These criteria are decided at a national level, and we cannot administer vaccines to patients who are not eligible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. I can't make the clinic date being offered, is there an alternative date?

All eligible patients may come to either of the two dates we are offering, but these are the only two clinics we currently have planned. If you can’t make either of them, you can get the vaccine at a local walk-in clinic. How to book in Bristol and the surrounding areas is provided here: Vaccination - BNSSG Healthier Together

Q. I had a bad reaction to the last/a previous vaccine, can I have a different one?

There are two vaccines being provided this Autumn, Pfizer Comirnaty and Moderna SpikeVax. We are likely to be allocated only one of these vaccines but we don’t yet know which. If we only have one available, you may be able to get the other at a pharmacy or walk-in clinic but we will not be able to advise on this.

Q. I don't want to have my Flu and Covid vaccines at the same time.

There is no extra risk of a reaction when having both vaccines together and the NHS is encouraging patients who are eligible for both to have them at the same time. However, this does remain your choice and you will be able to discuss with a clinician at your vaccination appointment. We will not be able to guarantee a second appointment for you to have them separately.

Q. Is it Halal?

All Covid vaccines currently being used are Halal.

All Flu injections currently being used are Halal. The (LAIV) flu nasal spray, for under 18 year olds, contains Pork Gelatine, however, it has been advised by Fatwa still to have it as this is the most effective for children. If parents refuse due to the pork content, they may be offered an injection instead.

Q. Which Vaccine can I have if I have an egg allergy?

Covid - All vaccines are egg-free and suitable for someone with an egg allergy.

Flu - the QIVc vaccine (sometimes referred to as the ‘under 65yrs vaccine’) is egg-free and suitable for all over 6 months. Anyone who has an egg allergy should have this vaccine.  The aQIV vaccine (sometimes referred to as the ‘over 65 years vaccine’) does contain a small amount of egg.

Q. I'm pregnant, is it safe to have these vaccines?

Yes. In fact, you are encouraged to do so for both Flu and Covid vaccines.

Q. I have had a Covid vaccine recently, should I have another one?

You should wait at least 3 months (12 weeks) between Covid vaccines. (3 months before 5th October 2024 is 13th July 2024)

Q. I currently have Covid, can I have a vaccine?

Yes. You no longer have to wait any length of time between having a Covid infection and having a Covid vaccine, as long as you feel well enough to have a vaccine. Please wear a mask and take appropriate safety measures (hand washing, etc) to avoid transmission.

Q. If I’m not eligible, is there any way I can get vaccinated?

We are only able to vaccinate eligible patients, but some pharmacies do offer private services.

Q. I have been invited to have the RSV vaccine. Can I have it at the same time as the Flu and/or Covid vaccines?

No. We are advised that the RSV vaccine would reduce the efficacy of the Flu and/or Covid vaccines, so there needs to be a gap of at least two weeks.
