Prescription Fees

BACK TO MAIN INDEX

Extensive exemption and remission arrangements protect those likely to have difficulty in paying charges (NHS prescription and dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs).

The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication (see below).

When going abroad you can take your NHS medications with you.

These charges apply in England only.
In Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales prescriptions are free of charge.

Prescription Prepayment Certificates

If you know you'll have to pay for a lot of NHS prescriptions, it may be cheaper to buy a prescription prepayment certificate (PPC). There are three types, two for all prescriptions and one specifically for patients who are prescribed Hormone Replacement Therapy.

HRT Prepayment Certificates

As the HRT prepayment certificate only covers HRT medication, GPs are being asked to put HRT medications on separate prescription forms to any other medications you may be taking. Please request your medication in the usual way and our prescription clerk team, will put HRT requests through on a separate script.
